Spring has officially arrived, which means that warmer weather will soon on the way. But we’re not out of the heating season woods yet: temperatures in our Ontario service area can dip below 10˚ C well into May, so your heating equipment will be doing its duty for a bit longer.
With that in mind, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your propane or heating oil levels, and to top off if you haven’t done so in a while.
This is especially true for heating oil customers. Why? Because an oil tank that contains more air than fuel will accumulate condensation (water) on its interior walls quickly as temperatures change.
This condensation creates two big problems for your heating oil tank: first, it creates a perfect environment for growing bacteria in your fuel, which will eventually transform your heating oil into a thick sludge that will jam your fuel lines and rob your system of efficiency. Second, accumulated moisture will eventually sink to the bottom of your tank (since water is heavier than oil) and corrode it from the inside out – a problem you won’t see coming until it’s too late.
The bottom line: Aim to keep your heating oil tank at least half full year-round, especially during the change of seasons!
