Propane Safety and Handling

Barbeque season is officially in full-swing and we always encourage the proper handling of propane cylinders. Dave explains how to keep your family safe around the grill this summer in this helpful video:

  • Ensure your propane cylinder is in-date. The date of the certification is stamped on the cylinder collar. Cylinders are in-date for ten years beyond the specified certification date.
  • Routinely inspect cylinders for dents or pitting. Ensure the foot ring securely holds the cylinder straight and upright.
  • Make sure your cylinder has a proper shoulder label.
  • Cylinders must be upright, secure and well-ventilated during transportation.
  • Perform a “soap” test after the cylinder is connected. Simply apply a solution of soap and water to each fitting and valve. Observe for any bubbling, which would indicate a leak.
  • Refrain from storing spare cylinders in confined spaces. Heat will cause propane expansion and cylinders will over-pressurize.
